TASTING COMPETITION
TOP PICKS FROM FIVE YEARS OF TASTINGS

From 2006 through 2010, Polished Palate International Rum Competition panelists judged more than 260 sugar cane-based spirits from rum, rhum & cachaca. Styles were grouped in categories including white, dark, gold, aged, flavored, spiced, & over-proof as well as cane-based liqueurs.

In the past five years, the competition has welcomed brands from as far East as Nepal & Australia, as far South as Paraguay, as far West as Hawaii and as far North as Oregon. The introduction of micro-distilled artisanal hand-crafted styles, now being made in the US and elsewhere, only serves to enhance the rum landscape.

One thing is certain; regardless of where rum is produced, it will always conjure up images of pristine white sandy beaches, balmy ocean breezes and softly swaying rhythms. We have never seen a rum drinker without a smile on their face!

OF SPECIAL NOTE

Of the 93 total rums listed, almost two-thirds are made in Venezuela, Brazil, Guatemala, Panama, Martinique, Barbados and the USA.

  • 2009 saw the first Best of Show Award. For a brand to receive this special accolade, all judging scores must average 90 points or higher. Ron Millonario Solera 15 Reserva Especial took those honors in 2009 and Zafra Master Reserve 21 Rum won in 2010.
  • The only Rum winning a Gold medal for 5 consecutive years is Khukri Rum from Nepal, which also won 2 consecutive Best of Category awards.
  • Diplomatico Reserva Exclusiva won 4 consecutive Gold Medals and 3 consecutive Best of Category awards.
  • One Barrel Rum from Belize won 4 Gold medals and one Best of Category.
  • Santa Teresa Araku Ron y Coffee Liqueur won 3 consecutive Gold medals and 2 consecutive Best of Category awards.
