“LIKE A KID IN A MEXICAN CANDY STORE”
The annual Nightclub & Bar Show at the Las Vegas Convention Center, which took place March 1-4, was exceptional. Several new brands and some old favorites made their appearance.
3 Amigos Tequila offers Blanco, Reposado and Anejo. All three aredouble-distilled. The Reposado is aged in charred white oak barrels for 11 months—9 months longer than the required three, and, brings an elegant woody character while still retaining that hint of blue agave. The Anejo is aged 2 years, twice as long as the minimum, with lovely vanilla and caramel overtones. Forget getting near their booth—at least 75 amigos were there at all times!!!!!!
Oooooooooooh, that Voodoo magic sure puts a spell on you. Each hand-made bottle promises there’s magic power within and includes a magic word (happiness, respect, love, inspiration, serenity…) on the back of each bottle, also indicating the barrel in which your tequila rested. The Voodoo Tiki Desert Rose (Prickly Pear) infused style is our new mojo. We’re anxious to see what hoodoo their Platinum Silver, Reposado, Anejo, Green Dragon (Mandarin Lime) and Blue Dragon (Blue Kiwi) styles impart!
Since the mid-1900’s, the producers of a new luxury line of Tequila, Mejor, been cultivating premium quality Blue Weber Agaves. This estate-grown modern luxury Tequila hails from the Los Altos de Jalisco–an area known for rich red soils and a tame arid microclimate. Mejor produces Blanco, Reposado, Anejo and Pink Tequilas (the latter only lightly accented with a fresh natural fruit juice.
We had the pleasure of meeting Inaki Orozco, President and CEO of Riazul Tequila at the Show, who led us through a private tasting of both their Premium Silver and Premium Anejo offerings. Baby Agave plants are chosen to make Riazul, imparting hints of sweetness and vanilla on the palate. The Anejo is aged in European White Oak barrels and aged for longer periods than other top quality brands resulting in an immensely sippable Anejo.
Oro Azul Tequilas launched at the Spirits of Mexico event in New York City in 2003 and recently won Gold Medals for the Blanco & Reposado and a Silver for their Anejo (2008 Spirits of Mexico Competition, San Diego). Each style is complex, with multiple layers, from vanilla and nougat to toasted nuts and tropical fruit.
