Rum Ball

BY SPECIAL INVITATION ONLY

This sponsored evening will reveal the winners of the Cocktail Challenge ‘in search of’ the YBOR COCKTAIL and the International Cane Spirits Tasting Competition. Rum Ball takes place on Saturday evening, March 25, at the Lions Eye Institute Transplant & Research Facility located at 1410 N. 21st Street.

ICS Tasting Competition

The International Cane Spirits Tasting Competition (ICSTC) is the only tasting event in the United States dedicated to the Sugar Cane Spirits industry. While there are other respected tasting competitions in the US and Europe, this is the only opportunity for Sugar Cane Spirits to be judged on their own merit and in classes recognized by distillers and the Sugar Cane Spirits trade.

The judging staff includes industry experts from around the world, and, from the distilling, mixology, culinary and spirits media industries.

Cocktail Challenge

Ybor City , birthplace of the Cuba Libre, has its roots steeped in Rum. The drink of the Cuban Revolution in the late 19th Century is still the most popular cocktail consumed in this city, also called Guava City . Early settlers came in search of Guava fruit, but, while Guava was not plentiful, they saw the potential of the area and, resultantly, Vicente Martinez Ybor founded the first cigar factory here

Also known as Cigar City and currently a melting pot of all ethnicities, the founding ‘tampenas’ were primarily from Cuba, Spain and Italy, so Ybor City is also referred to as Florida’s Latin Quarter. Ybor City ’s illustrious history and proud heritage have nurtured the thirst of thousands of patrons who visit the area each year. It’s time to create a cocktail that represents this new period of revitalization and tastes, while paying homage to its rich and colorful history.

Bartenders, Bar Chefs & Mixologists from around the region will be invited to compete in creating the Ybor Cocktail. The key ingredient: Guava fruit. Cocktail Challenge rules and regulations will be created by a team of well-known and highly-regarded specialists. One winner and 2 Runners-Up will be chosen. The Cocktail Challenge is co-hosted by Yuri Kato of Cocktail Times
