Mario Marquez

Mario Marquez’s passion for tequila began as a server at Café Coyote in Old Town San Diego. He was determined to educate himself on the list of more than 100 tequilas on the menu. It started with a hobby that grew into a passion for tequila knowledge.

In the past three years Mario has gathered an in depth understanding of tequila culture. He constantly studies the spirit and is always trying to learn something new about all the brands that compete in the tequila market. Mario has gone out of his way to visit more than 15 different tequila distilleries. He has met with various master distillers and owners to help him build his understanding of what it takes to make quality tequila. He has tasted and examined more than 400 tequilas in the 100 % agave category.

Mr. Marquez was currently certified as one of the first Tequilier Ambassadeurs in the United States. The highly accredited, Mexican Academy of Tequila, U.S.A gave this award for completing its expert seminar on tequila. Mario passed the exam with one of the highest scores.

You can meet Mario at Café Coyote (www.cafecoyoteoldtown.com) on Thursday or Friday nights from 5-9. He is appointed as Tequila Ambassador for the restaurant. The concept of Tequila Ambassador is similar to that of a sommelier. Mario will personally guide you through over 100 tequilas to help you learn and select the one that is right for you.
